In this article:
Our MCP Server connects your preferred AI tool to Moqups so it can work right alongside your team. That way, your AI assistant can, among other things, turn wireframes into hi-fi designs, iterate and explore multiple design options, analyze diagrams to find missing steps and edge cases, and organize your team’s brainstorming notes.
In this article, you'll learn how to connect your AI tool, what it can do in your projects, and how to stay in control of the changes it makes.
Who can use this feature?
The MCP Server is available on all paid Moqups plans, with daily and monthly limits that depend on your plan. You'll find the details in the Plans and limits section below.
You'll also need an AI tool that supports MCP connections. MCP (Model Context Protocol) is an open standard that lets AI tools connect directly to apps like Moqups.
What AI can do in your projects
Once connected, your AI tool can work across your wireframes, diagrams, and whiteboards. Here are some examples of what you can ask it to do:
-
Wireframes and mockups:
- Build a wireframe from notes in your project
- Create variations of a wireframe to explore multiple options
- Read notes and requirements and apply them to a design
- Take a low-fidelity wireframe to a hi-fi design
- Apply your brand's colors and fonts
- Analyze wireframes and make suggestions
- Make a mobile version of a desktop layout or vice versa
- Create a dark mode version of your design
- Fill wireframes with draft text, proofread, or write final copy
- Generate handoff code based on designs
-
Diagrams and flowcharts:
- Create flowcharts, network, process, ERD, and UML diagrams from notes
- Check diagrams for gaps and missed steps, and suggest improvements
- Identify edge-case issues in modeling
- Create sitemaps and flowcharts from your notes
- Generate code based on existing database diagrams in Moqups
- Convert a diagram to Mermaid code
-
Whiteboards and frameworks:
- Search, sort, and cluster sticky notes by theme
- Summarize brainstorming sessions and create action items
- Build frameworks for sprints, retrospectives, and strategy sessions
- Create decision trees or matrices from meeting or workshop notes
- Create user journey maps from research notes
-
Comments:
- Read, analyze, and summarize stakeholder feedback
- Create or update wireframes, diagrams, and boards based on that input
AI can add, rename, and resize pages. It can also add, change, restyle, or delete objects. But it cannot delete pages or projects themselves.
AI can read the comments on your projects, but it can't add, reply to, or resolve them.
Connect your AI tool
The Moqups MCP Server is hosted online, so there's nothing to install. You'll connect using this server URL:
https://api.moqups.com/mcp
To connect your AI tool:
- Copy the server URL above.
- Open the connector or MCP settings in your AI tool, and add a new custom connector using the URL.
- When prompted, sign in to your Moqups account and allow access.
- To check that it's working, ask your AI tool to list your Moqups projects.
For complete step-by-step instructions, choose your AI tool below:
| AI tool | Setup guide |
|---|---|
| Claude | Get started with custom connectors using remote MCP |
| ChatGPT | Developer mode and MCP apps in ChatGPT |
| Mistral | MCP Connectors |
| Claude Code | Connect Claude Code to tools via MCP |
| VS Code | Add and manage MCP servers in VS Code |
For AI tools not listed here, add the server URL as a custom connector or MCP server in your tool's settings.
Some AI tools only offer custom connectors on certain plans, or need an admin to add them. Check your AI tool's guide above.
Point AI to the right work
Your AI tool can find projects by name, but it works faster when you're specific. Name the team and project you want it to work on, or paste a link to a project or page into your request.
If you want AI to focus on a specific area of your design, use our link to selection feature; once you’ve selected an object or group, right-click and choose ‘Copy link to selection’ from the context menu or select ‘Share link to selection’ in the Sharing window in the editor.
Permissions
Your AI tool has the same access to Moqups that you do. It can open any project in any team that you belong to, but nothing else.
AI also reflects your own role in each project. If you only have permission to view and comment on a project, then AI can read that project but can't change it. Similarly, AI can see your teams, but it can't change them.
If you belong to more than one team, AI can access those multiple teams. To make sure AI works in the right place, just specify which team and project it should use.
Keep control of AI changes
AI changes appear in your project as they're made, so anyone who has that project open will see them happen in real time.
Many AI tools can also ask for your permission before each change they make to your project. You'll usually find this option in your AI tool's connector or permission settings. Turning it on lets you check every change before it happens, which is useful while you're still learning how AI handles your projects.
For larger tasks, ask for one change at a time and check the result before asking for the next.
Undo and Redo don't apply to changes made by AI, so duplicate your project before asking AI to make large changes.
Plans and limits
Each Moqups plan includes a set number of AI requests per day and per month:
| Plan | Requests per day | Requests per month |
|---|---|---|
| Starter | 50 | 500 |
| Business | 200 | 2000 |
| Unlimited | 1000 | 10000 |
On each plan, AI can make up to 20 requests per minute. Each time your AI assistant reads from your project, or makes a change, it counts as one request – so a single task usually uses several calls. For example, reading a wireframe and then updating it will use at least two requests.
As we learn how teams use the MCP Server, we may adjust these limits, and any changes will be reflected here.
Disconnect your AI tool
Once you connect an AI tool, it is listed in the Integrations tab of your Moqups Dashboard, and you can disconnect it from there at any time.
To disconnect an AI tool:
- Open the Account menu in the lower-left corner of the Left Sidebar.
- Select Integrations from the menu.
- In the Moqups MCP Server section, click the Disconnect button next to the AI tool.
You can also remove the connector from your AI tool's own settings.
Questions and Answers
Why can't my AI tool find a project?
Check that you have access to the project in Moqups, since AI can only open the same projects that you can. If the project name is shared by projects in different teams, name the team too, or give AI a link to the project.
I've connected, but my AI tool isn't using Moqups. What should I do?
Some AI tools need the connector switched on in each conversation, or need to be restarted after you add it. If that doesn't help, disconnect and connect again. You can also prompt your AI to use the Moqups MCP Server when starting a task.
When do my AI request limits reset?
Daily limits reset at midnight UTC each day, and monthly limits reset at midnight UTC on the first day of each month.
What happens when I reach my limit?
AI stops working in your Moqups projects until your limit resets. If you reach it partway through a task, AI may complete only part of the work. Before asking AI to make large changes, duplicate your project so you have a copy to go back to.
Can I use the MCP Server on the Free plan?
No, Moqups’ MCP Server is only available for our paid plans.
Something went wrong with an AI change. Can my work be restored?
Reach out to our support team and we'll do our best to help. As a precaution, duplicate your project before asking AI to make large changes.
Do I still need the Moqups extension?
The extension does things the MCP Server doesn't. Use it to turn live webpages into editable layouts, take screenshots, or generate design briefs – or to bring AI designs into Moqups without connecting your AI tool.
